Not there yet

Today I got my first personally-addressed "invitation" to consider living in a retirement home.

I am not convinced that "the carefree lifestyle you deserve" is quite for me, at this point.  I am quite convinced that I can't afford it.  And of course my idea of a carefree lifestyle involves having lots and lots of books, tools, craft materials, supplies for experimental cooking, and other Stuff which probably won't fit easily into a retirement suite.

I do wonder how they got my name — what list, or whatever, am I on to make them think I'm a prospect?

I could take them up on their offer of a complimentary meal for two, I suppose; they're not too far from where I live.  Still... I'm bemused.

I am similarly self-excluded from their customer base, I'm sure, for like reasons.

On further musing... there's a certain crassness -- for want of a better word -- that bothers me about the premise that the semi-random people they're addressing should feel that they deserve a carefree lifestyle. There aren't a lot of people who truly deserve a "carefree lifestyle", whatever that is. Most of the ones who really merit a "carefree lifestyle" got that way by pursuing goals that aren't so "carefree" and probably aren't much interested in chucking such goals in favour of being "carefree".

Of course, that way of thinking derives from the premise that only unusually "good" people merit a "carefree lifestyle". Whatever that is. I'm somewhat biased by having seen too many more-or-less-rotten people enjoying wealth and success.

"Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something."
