Free air at gas stations?

bunsen_hI'm finally able to ride my bike again, and it seems that there have been a few changes in the past year: all of the local gas stations are now charging to turn on the air compressor to inflate my tires. Anywhere from 50 cents to a dollar... some of them used to be free. (And I used to buy gas at the stations that didn't charge me to inflate the tires, on the rare occaasions when I used a car.) Are there any places around that will let me inflate my tires for free? Preferably in the Merivale/Meadowlands area?
So far, I've been out twice on my bike — just short excursions. It's still somewhat painful for me to do it; the pain seems to be connected with stretching and bending my back, not with bumps in the road or other things that jar my back. Since the stretching and bending is stuff that I need to do more of to get better, I'm going to try to continue, within limits of the level of discomfort that I can cope with.
It's very nice to have even this limited amount of mobility again. And nice to be out in the sunlight.
