I just bought a few things at the local Bulk Barn.  When I double-checked the sales receipt after I left the store, I saw that it included a 10% seniors/students discount.  (This is a special that the store offers every Wednesday.)

Huh.  I didn't think that I looked that young or that old.

Yes, I've been poking around looking for a post-doc position, but I don't think that would count as being a student even if I found a place.

I'd work on the assumption that you were read as a student, and not a senior.

Unless the counter person was twelve!

Oh, probably. I look younger than I am, and the fact that I was shopping for groceries in mid-afternoon when normal grown-ups would be at work would have biased a careless observer.

The first summer I worked in the chemistry department at Carleton U, right out of high school, a couple of people I encountered in the hallways asked if I was a student there, and a couple asked if I was a grad student. I don't quite fit into the usual appearance slots.

At least you don't get tagged with the wrong gender!

Actually, I do, from time to time -- maybe every couple of years, some especially inattentive clerk or checkout critter addresses me as "ma'am". As you might expect, that earns them a long look and a raised eyebrow.

Speaking of students, you've heard of OC Transpo adopting a stricter age-based definition of who can be a student for bus pass rules than reality admits to?

I caught some mention of it, but not a lot of detail. I gather that student organizations are trying to get that changed.

Yes, if you're 27 or older, you're obviously no longer a poor student. Right.
