Dragonhaven

I just finished reading Robin McKinley's Dragonhaven.  I liked it, on the whole; I found the narrative voice a bit annoying at times, but I think that was intentional on the part of the author.  The book is a very nice counterpoint to the McCaffrey approach to raising an infant dragon, which seems to amount to "stuff it with meat scraps, it'll be fine, and anyways there are drudges to deal with the messy stuff".

Am I correct in recalling that one of McKinley's recent books inspired a mountain-out-of-a-molehill fuss among some readers because one of the characters turned out to be gay — possibly this novel, which does have that plot element?  If so... it was a really tiny molehill.

I'm trying to remember if I read that... Pretty sure I did. I really liked it, and then couldn't remember who wrote it or what it was called, or where I'd seen it - probably the library. Oddly, I don't remember a gay character, but maybe it was too small of a molehill to hit my radar.

I'll have to track down a copy for my own library, I'd love to read it again. (Especially since, until I pay my overdue fees, I am persona non grata at the library...)

The gay character stuff came up in the five-years-later epilogue. "That guy who was always officious and irritating? Now that he's got a boyfriend, he's much calmer. Yeah, turns out he's gay, not just not-interested-at-all, but until recently we had so few people around here to interact with that he never had a chance to figure it out." And that's about it. Not much to get offended about.

haven't read that one yet. actually been remiss about keeping current on her stuff. do read her blog though...
