One of the trees in my front yard split while I was out yesterday — presumably in the big storm in the evening.  Half of it is lying across my roof (and, from the inside, doesn't appear to have caused any significant damage) and will definitely have to be removed, and I'm pretty sure that the rest of the tree will have to go too.  Can any of my local friends give recommendations or warnings about tree-removal services?

Thanks in advance...

(ETA: My neighborhood was without electric power from 7:30 yesterday evening to just before 7:00 this morning.  I got home in utter darkness and didn't realize that the tree was down until just before I was going to go to bed, when I noticed that there were a lot more leaves and branches outside my office window than there should be.  I'd noticed a faint musty old-wood odour, but assumed that it was just because the furnace fan was off and the house was unusually hot and humid... it was probably because the tree thumped the roof, and stirred up dust in the attic space.)

My parents called Davey Tree when they had to get a tree removed after the last storm a few months ago.

Looking online (they have a website: davey.com) the number appears to be ph: 613-831-0225

My dad considered them "ok". He thought they got the job done reasonably, he just found them a little inefficient.

And by inefficient:

The "there is a large honking tree lying across my neighbours roof" got removed promptly, but the large mess of roots on the ground afterwards on the side of the driveway I think it took them about a week to finish clearing that up.

Thanks. I've left a message for them and am waiting to hear back. I'm not in a great hurry to move the fallen part (and the rest of the tree if it has to go) off my property; I just want it off my roof ASAP. There are a lot of trees that they'll have to deal with, and I understand priorities -- do the urgent stuff first, and the cleanup afterwards.

I used an arbourist, rather than a tree removal service. One of the nice things about an arbourist is that if they can save the tree, they will, if you want them to.

Make sure whoever you use is insured though. (Not that I suspect I need to mention that...but....) The last thing you need is for them to send it through your roof in the process and *not* have it covered.

After the nonsense with my roof, and other screw-ups by professionals, I'm very careful about things like their being insured.

The tree is split approximately in half, for a length of nearly 2 metres and down to about 2m from ground level. I'm not very hopeful that it can be saved, much though I'd like to keep it.

Glad at least your house is undamaged. We saw some impressive damage last night. Most of it seemed quite arbitrary as what got hit and what didn't.

You might also get the arborist to trim back any other tree branches close to the house at the same time, to avoid this happening again.
