Was it merely a coincidence that ARPANET, the precursor of the internet, was brought on-line on the tenth anniversary of the first publication of Astérix?

I think not.

Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the first publication of Astérix, and the 40th of the startup of ARPANET (which then crashed on the third character transmitted). The image shown on Google's main page yesterday had Astérix and Obélix thumping a Roman soldier.

I'm glad she liked the squid. Given that the OSBP is open-source-y, she's welcome to copy it...

Hmm, interesting -- my web page about the OSBP links to an "inspiration" image which seems to have been removed from Phillip M. Jackson's server.
