Buoyancy

Some of my friends create a... striking effect while they're swimming.

Cut, again, for some semblance of good taste )

It's bloody cold out.  Enough that I'm getting frost on the frames of the fancy argon-filled windows that I had installed a few years ago, or at least those windows which don't have hot-air registers below them.

The pools at the SportsPlex are also cool today.  Apparently the water was changed on the weekend, and the pools haven't warmed up yet.  This made my swim today rather less pleasant and effective than usual.  (It was also relatively brief, because the Para Transpo van got me to the pool about half an hour later than usual, but I guess that wasn't such a bad thing under the circumstances.)

When I got home,  I found a flyer in my mailbox for GoodLife Fitness, advertising a 1¢ enrolment fee on a 1-year membership.  This has me pondering "GoodLife Fitness Contract" to the tune of "Hotel California".  ("You can cancel any time you like but you can never leave...")

My current schedule for swimming is that I'm at the Nepean Sportsplex Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from around 11:30 to around 1:00.  I start and finish by relaxing and stretching in the "Swirlpool" (hot tub); in between I'm doing a variety of exercises and swimming in the shallow-water pool (30'C).  I'd welcome company for any of this.  I'd also consider swimming at other times and locations if that would lead to companionship.

I'll be swimming at the Nepean Sportsplex this afternoon, from about 1:30 (depending on the vagaries of Para Transpo) to 3:00.  This will involve relaxing in the "Swirlpool" (hot tub) and gentle swimming in the warm-water pool.  I'd welcome company, on the off chance that anyone's available.

I'm still low-mobility, and people-deprived.  Also low-energy.  If anyone is interested in quietly hanging out for a while this evening, I'd welcome visitors.  I doubt if I'll make it to midnight.  (If necessary, I've got a nice bed in the spare room...)  I don't have plans yet for Saturday.

I hope to go swimming at the Sportsplex regularly for the next month or two.  This will depend on their making the warm-water pool available for casual swimming.  At the moment, the on-line schedule shows almost nothing except for lane swimming, mostly in the big pool.  I called them yesterday evening, and the woman I spoke with was surprised — her supervisor had told her that the pools would be following about the same schedule this term as last.  She thinks that someone has neglected to update the on-line schedule, and was to leave a note for her boss.

At this point, I'd just like to get 2010 over with, or (more precisely) get all of the lonely, painful misery long gone.

Happy New Year, everyone.  May it be a damn sight better than the old one.

Julian Assange... I don't think that having one-night stands with two different women only a couple of days apart justifies him being charged with rape, but I also don't think it merits a Nobel prize.  (ETA: I suppose there might be details which I haven't heard about which might involve significant advances in medicine, economics, physics, etc.)

I'm looking for a couple of green LED replacement "Christmas lights", i.e., lamp bulbs with a C7 base, for use as night lights.  Canadian Tire has them in red, white, and blue, 0.35W (which is about right for my purposes), but no other colours.  If anyone knows of a local store that's likely to have them in green, please let me know.  Yes, they can be bought on-line, but usually only in quantity and/or at prohibitive cost for shipping.  I know I could buy white bulbs and add green colour, or replace the white LED with a green one, but that's a bit more hassle than I'd like to go to if I can avoid it.

I went swimming yesterday at the Nepean Sportsplex... carefully.  The medium pool is 30'C and comfortable for slow swimming; the "swirlpool" tub is 38'C and comfortable for relaxing in.  I'm hoping to go back periodically.  I didn't get as much exercise as I'd have liked, but I'm not yet capable of it.  I think the stretching did me some good, at least; yesterday evening I still had the usual pain levels but I did feel a bit better balanced, or something.

The surgeon has told me that I'm ready to start swimming again.  My mobility is getting better: today I walked down to the south end of Merivale Mall at a good pace without any real problems (though I had a bit of a lie-down when I got back).

So I'm planning to start regular swimming again, most usually in the pool in my Dad's apartment building.  (Salt-water chlorination means that the water isn't irritating; the temperature is pretty steady around 28'C.)  I'd welcome swimming partners.  The building is pretty easy to get to, on Parkdale just north of Scott, a block away from the Tunney's Pasture transit station.

I'm tentatively thinking about going on Thursday or Friday afternoon, if anyone's interested in joining me.
