Last autumn, without warning, the city sent a backhoe and truck, and gouged out the drainage ditch in front of my house.  They left bare dirt, exposed mangled tree roots, and so on.

This morning, without warning, they're back.  They're spreading a bit of topsoil and some grass seed.

I suppose I should be glad that they are, finally, repairing some of the damage.  I can't say I'm impressed.  And, of course, I'd rather that they used clover seed instead of grass, though it's possible that whatever grass they're using is actually well suited to stabilize the soil in a drainage ditch.  And, of course, will be able to sprout, root, and settle in, in the hottest driest part of the year, without my having to provide water and care, because I can't.

It sounds very... random.

Quite.

I went out after they'd been working for a while -- I'd sort of noticed the machine noises but not paid attention, then looked out the window and saw the yellow bulldozer shovel spreading dirt. There were a couple of guys standing on my lawn watching, and I asked them, "So what's happening?"

One of them turned to me and said, "We're spreading topsoil and grass seed. We dug it up last fall, and... we didn't come back."

I said, "Yeah, I'd noticed... Fine. I'd prefer clover seed, but... whatever."

The current forecast is for several days of moderate temperatures with some rain, so the conditions are probably about as good as they could be for the seed to grow.

I had no damage from the quake, as far as I can tell -- the house rattled for about half a minute, but it was kind of like having some heavy diesel equipment running in front of my house but an order of magnitude worse. I just had a call from my father, who lives north and a bit east of me and in an apartment a few floors up. He told me that he got home to find some stereo equipment and a lot of CDs shaken off their shelves. Some of the CDs' cases were damaged; I don't know if his electronics are OK.
