A few weeks ago, Cheflad gave a very positive recommendation of the movie Ratatouille. (I don't think I'd even been aware that there was a new Pixar movie out -- I didn't go to see Cars.) He mentioned that it was very realistic in a lot of ways; in particular, he knew most of the characters from various restaurant kitchens he'd worked in.

I finally went to see it yesterday. Strong positive reaction from me, too -- that was fun. I needed that. Good characters, nice work with the dialogue. Up to Pixar's usual standards. It's a nice story about, among other things, overcoming prejudices; some of the antagonists learn better and mend their ways. The short animation at the beginning, "Lifted", was laugh-out-loud funny, too.

On the technical side, the Pixar people still have some work to do on their animation of viscous liquids -- some of the food-preparation things didn't work as well as they might have. And their wine appeared to be zero-alcohol. But other liquids worked very well, and they've got things like water spray just about perfect. Their rendering of hair is much better than before, and they've done a fine job on wet hair (which didn't look very realistic in The Incredibles).

Chef and I loved Paris in the fog. And we shook with laughter when the poor in-training guy in Lifted finally howled in fustration and waved wildly up and down the board mashing all the buttons in sight. Classic.
