The current cost estimate for needed renovations to the prime minister's residence at 24 Sussex Drive is approximately $310 million.

That's $10 million for the repairs, and the rest to remove the occupant so the work can be done.

Hmmmm.

And I suppose leaving him there until the walls collapse, the electrical system burns the house down, or he dies of lung cancer are not viable options? :(

Unfortunately, that kind of event can be used in the same way that "the Reichstag fire" in Weimar Germany was -- an excuse to extirpate democracy and freedom.

Agreed. That kind of excuse for such behaviour we cannot afford to give to anyone.

Ever.

Where are you getting the 300 from? I just see the 10 mill listed in the article.

The 2000 federal election cost about $200 million, and the 2004 election about $278 million. I couldn't find the cost of the 2006 election with a few minutes of searching, but allow for inflation and such-like.

I thought you wanted to sue him or put him up in the Chateau Laurier.

How would one argue for a lawsuit?

I've always held that we need an election now ...

When will the Liberals get over their cowardice and force an election?? The ^last^ thing Canada needs is more Harper ...

I think he'd win if an election was held now. If not a majority then at least another minority.

I think our PM is confusing the White House and 24 sussex. The White House is a seat of power, when the president leaves it would be for a crisis situation. 24 Sussex is only a residence.

He doesn't try to get work done there that he can't get away with in the House or the Langevin Block?

And if he allowed the work to be done he'd be criticised for feathering his own nest at taxpapyer expense (same thing happened to Mulroney).

It's a no-win situation for the PM.

Please, "Anonymous", spare me. Harper didn't say anything about wanting to save the taxpayers money. He said that he wasn't going to leave the house until his term was up.

Allowing desperately-needed repairs to be done has nothing to do with "feathering his own nest", and nothing to do with Mulroney's redecoration.
